Secondhand Smoke Damages

Worries about secondhand smoke in bars, restaurants, and other public places ended up being the deciding factor in a much debated topic in Columbia.

In a 4-3 vote, on October 10, 2006, the City Council of Columbia decided to ban smoking in all public places for the health of non-smokers and the risk of secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is known as ETS (Environmental Tobacco Smoke), is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of cigarette, pipe or cigar, and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers.

Secondhand smoke is a known cause of cancer in humans by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.
